DiggDotCom

Powerful social bookmarking site

I read this thread from a fellow forumer (is there such a word?!!) at Cari as in search for quite some times now. Baloot, the romantic and seductive blogger wants to know what Digg is all about?

As a favour, I'm going to post what do I know about I'm doing this not for Baloot alone, but I'm educating myself too. You see, I have joined and registered at Digg since December last year, but I still couldn't find the time to know more about Digg and its capabilities. I read an article by some Pro Blogger (I forgot who?) the power of using Digg. So, here goes (from Digg.com herself);

What is Digg?

Digg is a place for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the web. From the biggest online destinations to the most obscure blog, Digg surfaces the best stuff as voted on by their users. You won’t find editors at Digg — they’re here to provide a place where people can collectively determine the value of content and they’re changing the way people consume information online.

How do they do this? Everything on Digg — from news to videos to images to Podcasts — is submitted by their community (that would be you). Once something is submitted, other people see it and Digg what they like best. If your submission rocks and receives enough Diggs, it is promoted to the front page for the millions of their visitors to see.

And it doesn’t stop there. Because Digg is all about sharing and discovery, there’s a conversation that happens around the content. They’re here to promote that conversation and provide tools for their community to discuss the topics that they’re passionate about. By looking at information through the lens of the collective community on Digg, you’ll always find something interesting and unique. They’re committed to giving every piece of content on the web an equal shot at being the next big thing.

In short, Digg is a very popular website, an example of the best of what Web 2.0 has to offer. As you already knew, all contents submitted to Digg are not controlled by a cabal of editors but by popularity as rated by regular uses. Yes, we the regular user rated the popularity of any articles posted. And this puts the power of information in the hands of the regular user, like you and me.

You can also rate down submissions which you think are spam or just simply lame. And voice your comments on the various issues. In fact, Digg is so powerful that it can affect real world events. For example, if ABC, an old media stronghold ran a piece smearing Dr. Ron Paul who is running for the US of A presidency, the story get send to Digg. These mounted to a mass protest by the people to ABC or boycotted their sponsors. It is said, media's domination of what is information and what isn't is deteriorating. That's show how powerful Digg can be.

Articles that make it to the main page generate copious amounts of traffic. That's the main keyword - TRAFFIC! Create quality contents for the masses to "Digg It" as many as possible will guarantee massive amount of traffic to your blog/site. For many content creators — Digg is the place to publish for these authors. More informations on how Digg works can be read as recommended by Malaysia's first Recovery Blogger,here.

Malaysia's first Recovery Blogger at Digg.

Now come the interesting part. How to put up Digg It badge on Blog*Spot? Here is the part why I love using Blogger rather than WordPress. I learned a lot about template, HTML, website building and many many more at Blogger. No plugin to make your life easy! I got my peace of mind and ultimate satisfaction by learning and hacking Blogger's template. And it works! ;-)

Okay, let's start. It's simple really. Digg javascripts that we will be using can be found at Integrate: "Digg It" button.

  1. Before we do anything, you've to enable your post pages. To do that, from login to dashboard --> Setting --> Archiving. Set your enable post pages to yes and save. This will ensure that Digg It button will be on every posts.

  2. Under template, click Edit HTML and click on the box beside "Expand Widget Templates". Note: By all means, please backup your template by block copying the whole HTML and paste it on your Notepad or Word. And save as a text file. This will ensure that if anything does goes wrong, you can readily put up your template again in no time.

  3. Scroll down about two third of your template and search for these codes;

    <p><data:post.body/></p>

  4. If you want your Digg It button to look like mine to show at the right corner of your post, replace the above codes with these;

    <div style="float:right; margin-left:10px;">
    <script type="text/javascript">
    digg_url = "<data:post.url/>";
    </script>
    <script src="http://digg.com/tools/diggthis.js" type="text/javascript"/>
    </div>
    <p><data:post.body/></p>

  5. If you want it to appear at the end of the post, replace #3 codes with these;

    <data:post.body/>
    <div style="float:right; margin-left:10px;">
    <script type="text/javascript">
    digg_url = "<data:post.url/>";
    </script>
    <script src="http://digg.com/tools/diggthis.js" type="text/javascript"/>
    </div>

  6. And if you like it to appear on top left corner of your post, replace codes #3 codes with these;

    <div style="float:left; margin-right:10px;">
    <script type="text/javascript">
    digg_url = "<data:post.url/>";
    </script>
    <script src="http://digg.com/tools/diggthis.js" type="text/javascript"/>
    </div>
    <p><data:post.body/></p>

So, that's about all. I learned to place Digg It button at other different part of your template (#5 and #6) at Tips for New Bloggers. Head over there, you can learn a lot more about it.
