Having your own domain lets readers know you're serious about blogging-advertisers also see this aspect which, in turn, attracts them to your blog. As for hosting- shop around. I would start out with a cheaper plan and go up depending on your storage and bandwith needs. I use DreamHost and even though they've been a pain, I do have to say their support has always been A+ and always respond within hours-and lately within minutes. WordPress is the best platform to go with as far as blogging goes. I tried Movable Type several years ago and quickly switched back to WP. Right now, my blog has PR3 and it's hosted on blogger's server somehwere i don't know where. I thought to move my content to my own server using FTP publishing.
