Help Your Computer Run At Top Speed

Cache, Cookies and Kaspersky

I came across this thread on Bloggers' forum lately. I knew for a fact it has happened to a many computer users, including me!

On September 6th, 2007 after about two weeks without the I sent my beloved PC to someone who I thought knew more about computers than I am. I admits, when it comes about things in a computer, I raised both my hands in surrendered. I don't even know what's between a software and my kneecap?

All I wanted was to improve my beloved PC's performance, so that it will load faster. I thought this fellow has some sort of software to install in my PC to give that little extra boost. When I got back my PC, and set it up in it regular place at home, all sort of feelings came dancing in my mind. But none of that feelings says I'm in a jubilant moods!

In fact I was raving mad! Mad at myself for being sooooo STUPID! How could I be sooo dumb to give my PC to someone just because he owned a Cyber Cafe in town? Owning a Cyber Cafe does not make someone an expert in a computer's programming. I don't mind losing some applications, but to have my personal photos deleted - I felt like strangling him with my bear hands right here and now!

Just thinking about it made my blood boiled! If that's the way to make your PC performed faster, I can even DO a better job than him. Even if he claimed all my files and folders were being infected by viruses, a responsible programmer will make a copy of whatever files and folders he wanted to delete. Better still, if he could gave me a call to confirm which files to delete and which folders to copy.

Can you imagined what does it cost me to have all my files and folders deleted, including those irreplaceable photos in My Picture's folder? For that, I've to pay him RM55. Not only that, I've paid another USD49 to download a software so that I'm able to recover back my deleted photos. That's an interesting episode and it gonna be my next post's title. How to get back your deleted files or pictures? Subscribe to my full feed RSS to make sure you'll not missed out these coming awesome

Till now I'm still downloading useful applications to my PC like FireFox's browser, Google's toolbar, IE7, Media Player 11 and so forth. Never again I'm to give my PC to anybody, even if she or he got bagful of Diplomas or Degrees about computer's programming. I'm not gonna fall to any sweet-talked salemen ever again.

Not only that, I then noticed that I couldn’t see any of the “banner ads” on any sites. By “banner ads” I mean AdSense, Auction Ads, Kontera, AdBrite etc. All those ads seem to be all javascript enabled advertising services. There were no errors being reported on the websites, it just that the ads cannot be displayed!

My blood started to rise again. It seem that I got myself into troubles right after one another. During all those times, I'm still not able to connect to the Internet. I knew all those AdSense, Auction Ads, Kontera, AdBrite are still available on my blogs because I'm still earning a few dollars from them. Furthermore all my friends told me that they can see all those ads on my blogs.

I started asking some questions around the Blogosphere. I asked, "What applications are needed for a normal PC to be able to display AdSense or ads similiar like AdSense."

I even asked the above question on AdSense Help, but nobody can really answered my question. When I thought there was nothing more to be done, I came across Mrs. Charly Leetham's website. I sign up my name and downloaded her "Pocket Guide To Protecting Your Computer's" ebook.

After reading her ebook, I found out that she is an expert about computers. Frankly, at first I thought she would not answered my email asking for her help, but I was shocked to receive an email from her. She has answered my plea promptly. After exchanging several emails and several questions later, my problems was solved and everything turned out alright.

Visit now to her website, Fighting Spam and sign up for her "Pocket Guide To Protecting Your Computer's" ebook. I can guaranteed, you would not be disappointed to be her subscriber because you will learn a lot about computer via her regular emails.

Actually, I'm very touched when she stood all night trying to help someone she doesn't even know. You can read more about it in her own words on her blog at Remove Spyware: Protect Your Computer.

Whenever you're having trouble downloading images on your blog or when you realized that your computer are slow to respond, here are some things you should do;
  • About Browser Cache
When surfing the Internet, a cache on your computer stores copies of web pages you have visited in order to increase retrieval time in the future. These storage areas called caches (pronounced 'cash') are intended to make Internet browsing faster. However, if you don't clean your browser's cache regularly, the files that accumulate can cause errors in your browsing experience. You should clean your browser cache about once a week to help your computer run at top speed.
  • Cleaning your Cache: (delete temporary Internet files)

For Internet Explorer

  1. Select Tools, then Internet Options in the menu bar.
  2. Click the "Delete Files" button, and then click the OK button in the confirmation dialog box.
  3. Click the "Delete Cookies" button, and click OK in the confirmation dialog box.
  4. Click the OK button in the Internet Options dialog box.
  5. Close and reopen the browser.
  • Cookies: A small file that identifies your computer whenever you log on. The cookie is part of an encryption scheme that protects your privacy. Therefore, if your Internet browser is not set to allow cookies, the security program will not let you sign in.

For optimal computer performance, periodically delete your Internet Files. Follow these steps:

  1. Open a new Internet Explorer window and click Tools.
  2. Click Internet Options.
  3. On the General tab, click Delete Files and then click Delete Cookies.
Blog*Spot makes problems for your computer concerning the acceptance of cookies, especially when it's in context of you using the new versions of IE or Firefox browsers. Difficulties with accepting scripts may be caused by security systems, antivirus programs, firewalls, and some add-ons. You may have to check all your settings in these things.

As an anti virus software, I was using AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is the most popular free solution available at no cost to home users and provides the high level of detection capability that millions of users around the world trust to protect their computers.

After deleting most applications on Drive C, the so called programmer installed Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0.2.614 without me knowing about it. When my pleas for help reached the ears of Mrs. Charly Leetham, she pointed out to me the culprit that causes AdSense and other ads not displaying on my blogs was Kaspersky! Kapersky will block banner style ads.

And she was right about it. After tweaking the setting, at last I'm able to see all my ads displaying proudly once more. I found out that Kaspersky is a great software, but unintentionally while doing it works protecting my computer from all of the common Internet threats, including viruses, hacker attacks, adware, spam and spyware, it blocked AdSense from showing.

In it setting box as you can see below, it default setting blocked hundred of websites from showing. (Click images to enlarge.) Many well known websites are included like AdSense, AdBrite, StatsCounter, Xanga, AddMe and many many more. To suit my purpose, I've to untick the box to "enable anti banner." If you have small kids at home, and you have to protect them from seeing adult banners or something like it, it is very wise to tick on the "enable anti banner" box. This does not mean that I'm for adult materials. I found out those banners can be useful sometimes.

Setting: Anti Banner
